(03) There were two very significant events during Lincoln's presidency. Do you know what they were? 

One was the American Civil War. 

(American states were divided into two groups: Northern states and Southern states; and they fought a war.) 

The other was the abolition of slavery. 

Earlier, Afro-Americans were kept as slaves in the US by white men. 

They were bought and sold in the market like vegetables or meat. 

This practice was called slavery. 

Lincoln thought this practice was unfair. 

He wanted to stop it. 

So he passed a legislation abolishing the practice of slavery. 

Northern states supported him. 

But southern states wanted slavery to be continued. 

So there was a war between the two groups. 

This war was fought at a place called Gettysburg. 

At the end of the war, the Northern states won. 

A speech was delivered by Lincoln at Gettysburg when the war ended. 

This speech is famous in history as Gettsburg address. 

It begins like this: 

"Four score and seven years ago, our forefathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."
