Monsoon in India

Right now it's 5:08 a.m. in India and it's 15 April, Thursday here. It has been raining heavily since 3 a.m. This is the first rain in 2021. It's only spring and monsoons have not yet begun. What's this rain then?

To the south of India, there are three large waterbodies: 1. The Arabian Sea in the west 2. The Indian Ocean in the south 2. The Bay of Bengal in the east. (Since it is surrounded by water on three sides, this part of India is known as Peninsular India. A peninsula is a landmass that is surrounded by water on three sides.) Monsoons are winds from the Arabian Sea. They bring rain to India. The monsoons actually begin in the month of June. Monsoons usually enter Kerala on the first of June. Then they spread across the whole country. In books, you will see that before the actual content begins, there is a foreword and before this, there is a preface. In the same way, the monsoons have a foreword in the last week of May and in the middle of April. So we get some showers in mid-April and end-May. The showers in mid-April are known as MANGO SHOWERS or summer showers or pre-monsoon showers or April rain. The violent rain with thunder and lightning in May-end is known as MONSOON BURST.

Names of geological formations:

1. Peninsula: Land surrounded by water on three sides

2. Island: Land surrounded by water on all sides

3. Atoll: a ring-shaped island

[Islands are usually formed by volcanic activity. Atolls are formed by coral piles.]

4. Bay: A part of the sea that is curving in a half-moon shape

5. Gulf: Sea surrounded by land on three sides

6.Lake: Water surrounded by land on all sides

7. Strait: a narrow passage of water that separates two landmasses and connects two larger waterbodies

8. Isthmus: a narrow strip of land which connects two landmasses and separates two waterbodies

9. Channel: a wide passage of water connecting two parts of the ocean and separating two landmasses

[A channel is very similar to a strait. Only, a strait is very narrow and a channel is wider than a strait.]
